One Year with Rockfon: Rachel Berkin Reflects on Sustainability, Stone Wool and Innovation

September 3, 2025

My first year at Rockfon has been a journey of learning, collaboration and innovation. Although I came from a background in sustainability within the building products industry, I was new to both the ceilings and to stone wool. What I found at Rockfon was a culture that welcomed fresh perspectives and encouraged continuous improvement.

A Culture of Continuous Improvement

From day one, I felt the openness and ambition that define Rockfon’s culture. Across departments—from engineering to product management, I’ve seen a shared drive to push boundaries and enhance performance, sustainability and design. We’re always striving to develop the next innovation that will redefine the ceiling market.

Discovering Stone Wool’s Potential

It has been an empowering experience to be a part of an organization that continuously invests in stone wool across product categories and global regions. As an acoustical ceiling substrate - stone wool truly is a “hero” material. Stone wool is inspired by nature, endlessly recyclable, low VOC and beneficial across performance, human health, and circularity. Rockfon's entire stone wool portfolio is built on sustainable principles – inspired by nature and endlessly recyclable. Our ceiling tiles are all manufactured with a stone wool substrate, achieving low VOC at all performance levels.

Endlessly Recyclable with Rockcycle

In October of 2024, Rockfon officially implemented ROCKWOOL Group’s global recycling program – Rockcycle. Stone wool is a material that can be endlessly recyclable, again and again, without loss of performance. Beyond recyclability– all of our tiles are designed for durability and longevity with 30-year warranties.  Right now, we are looking to find projects to take-back and recycle, which can prove challenging with such long lifespans.  If you know of any Rockfon material that is ready to be decommissioned – reach out to Rockcycle@Rockfon.com.

Educating the Market

Since stone wool ceiling products are still relatively new in North America, I see education as a key part of my role. I have been working collaboratively with architects and designers to educate the industry both on the overall performance benefits and sustainability profile of stone wool ceiling tiles, as well as Rockfon’s own sustainability pursuits.  As a part of ROCKWOOL Group, we actively pursue global initiatives like the UN SDGs and have set robust emission-reduction goals with the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi).  I have had the opportunity to present our newest CEU, Sustainable ceiling solutions: transforming spaces from above, to firms across North America.

Design Meets Sustainability

One of the things I love most is the aesthetic consistency across our product line. No matter the tile, you get a smooth, high-end finish. This blend of performance, sustainability and design makes Rockfon ceiling tiles and panels the “easy button” for specifiers.

Learning Through Engagement

Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to attend regional sustainability events hosted by A+D firms as well as national conferences. Interacting with the market has enabled me to connect directly with both clients and team members across the country. These experiences helped me understand how sustainability is perceived in the commercial ceiling space and deepened my appreciation for Rockfon’s inclusive and forward-thinking environment.

What’s Next

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue sharing the sustainable values and qualities of our company and the products we make. Our sustainability story is guided by our Natural Foundation – The Natural Power of Stone, Fostering Health Indoors, Protecting the Outdoors, and Enduring Circularity. I invite you to learn more about our sustainability journey.

Gratitude

In closing, I feel immense gratitude to be a part of a global organization that prioritizes sustainability as a key metric of our success.  I feel equally grateful to be working side-by-side with many colleagues within our industry to continue moving sustainability forward. Nobody can do this work alone, and I am grateful to everyone’s dedication and partnership in the days ahead.
