Biomimicry: Let Nature Be Your Lead

What can 3.8 billion years of research and development teach us about design? Discover how biomimicry helps architects and designers create healthier, more resilient, and sustainable spaces.

Program Overview:

Nature has spent 3.8 billion years refining solutions to challenges related to resilience, efficiency, adaptation, communication, resource management, and sustainability. Biomimicry is the practice of learning from and emulating nature’s forms, processes, and systems to create innovative, high-performing design solutions.

This course explores the distinction between biophilia and biomimicry and introduces the foundational principles that enable designers to use nature as a model, measure, and mentor. Participants will examine Life’s Six Principles and discover how biological strategies inspire advancements in architecture, building materials, acoustics, durability, circularity, and occupant well-being. Through real-world case studies and examples from the built environment, attendees will learn how biomimetic thinking can inform more resilient, efficient, and human-centered design solutions while supporting long-term environmental stewardship.

Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate between biophilia, biophilic design, bioutilization, and biomimicry and identify how each approach influences the built environment.
  • Describe the core concepts of biomimicry, including the emulation of natural forms, processes, and systems, and explain how nature serves as a model for innovative design solutions.
  • Analyze Life’s Six Principles and evaluate how these nature-inspired strategies can be applied to improve resource efficiency, resilience, adaptability, and sustainability in architectural design.
  • Assess biomimetic case studies and building material applications that demonstrate improved performance in areas such as acoustics, durability, circularity, occupant comfort, and environmental responsibility.
  • Apply biomimetic design thinking to current and future projects by identifying opportunities to incorporate nature-inspired strategies that support human health, environmental performance, and long-term building resilience.
